PASCO, Wash. (KEPR) – What started as a side-gig to make some money for college has now turned into a booming business for a Pasco teen in Washington state.
Through some YouTube tutorials and trial and error, La Palma Scoops and Rolls has taken off, and soon will be expanding.
Bryson Cardenas discovered rolled ice cream while on a family trip on the East Coast.
"I thought it'd be a cool concept to bring here to the Tri-Cities," said Cardenas.
To do that, he needed a little help from his parents to get a business started.
Bryson Cardenas says, "I asked them for just enough to buy one machine and they Lent me that," said Cardenas.
After opening his doors just over a year ago while still in high school, he had no idea how his business would take off.
"Within the next couple of months, starting this business, I was able to pay them back full. When I first opened, it was about an hour wait for ice cream," said Cardenas. "I didn't know where to start, there was no sample place in the Tri-Cities, so I used my imagination."
He is pioneering his way through the novelty treat. At just 17-year-old, Cardenas became a full-time business owner, but he credits his parents as his inspiration.
"I just have to thank god and thank my parents for that, they came from Mexico with nothing in their pockets so for them to be able to build something from the ground up I thought that was so cool," said Cardenas.
Their second location will be open sometime in September. Cardenas says he won't just be rolling up ice cream. They plan to offer Japanese style crepes, scoops of ice cream, fresh fruit cups, and acai bowls.
